Did you know? – Interesting facts about Avataras!

  • 10 avataras (incarnations) of Lord Vishnu are popularly known. Srimad Bhagavatam talks about 24 – including Buddha, Vyasa, Kapila and Sanatkumaras.
  • The Lord came down to save the elephant king Gajendra from the clutches of the crocodile. The Name that the Lord took in this Avatar is “Hari”.
  • In Bhagavatam, Lord Hanuman says that the Lord was born as Sri Rama so that the world would, in future, respect the monkey clan!
  • Lord Vamana confronted king Mahabali on the banks of the river Narmada in a place called Brughukaccha. This place is the modern day Bharuch in Gujarat.
  • Kalki Avatar, which will be the last avatar in this current cycle, will take place in a village called Shambala in South India. He will be born to a person called Vishnuyashas.
  • Lord Vishnu took the form of the tortoise in order to provide a base for the Mandara Mountain which was the churning rod when the Devas and Asuras churned the milky ocean. When He was thus playing that role, He fell asleep and started snoring.  The breath He inhaled and exhaled during His snore are, today, the waves that we see in the ocean.
  • Kapila, an incarnation of the Lord, gave His teachings to his mother Devahuti, which is known as Sankhya Philosophy.  It is called so because it deals with a lot of numbers (‘Sankhya’ in Sanskrit means number).
  • Krishna lifted the Govardhana Hill on His little finger just as a little boy would lift a mushroom and gently swayed, thereby protecting His folks from the wrath of Indra. Eventually Indra realized His mistake and came down and coronated Krishna with a special Name – Govinda – by the very chanting of which one is exculpated of all sins.
