9th Annual Life and Soul Health Fair in Houston TX

Global Organization for Divinity volunteers actively participated in Love to Share Foundation America’s 9th annual Life and Soul Health Fair that was held in the Pearland/Manvel area of Houston on Sep 14, 2019.  The event saw close to 250 people including participants, vendors and volunteers. A large number of health service providers came together to provide free screenings and tests for the community.
Congressman Pete Olson provided a Congressional Declaration for the event and appreciated the organization for serving the community. Texas State Representative Ed Thompson, Mayor Pro-Tem of Manvel Ms. Lorraine Hehn, and the former Mayor of Manvel Ms. Delores Martin also attended the event and shared many encouraging words with the volunteers and attendees.
This 9th year of the healthfair saw a few firsts –  electronic health fair forms, oral cancer screenings  and participation by MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Clinical Cancer Genetics Center. Professionals from this center educated the public about their outreach programs to conduct genetic counseling and screenings in patients with a family history of cancer.
The screenings that were offered at the health fair, included cardiovascular screenings like ECG and Carotid Doppler, cancer screenings like oral cancer screening, thyroid cancer screening and mammograms. Bone density testing, vision, hearing, lung function and some basic blood tests were also offered to community members completely free of cost. More than 110 attendees received the Flu Vaccine. Free helmets were given at the health fair to more than 50 kids to prevent head injury and CPR education was imparted to the public by the Indo-American Nurses Association of Greater Houston.
Sponsors of the event included Texas Medical Association’s Be Wise – Immunize program and Hard Hats for Little Heads program, Walmart – Shadow Creek, Southeast Cardiovascular Associates, Coastal vascular Center, Alliance Health Partners, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Amgen Pharmaceuticals, Brookdale Home Health, US Imaging, University of Houston – School of Optometry, Alvin Community College, HEB plus – Pearland, UTMB, Dr Richard Johnigan, Dr. Anita Knox, Genesis Hearing Clinic, Sai Primary Care, New York Life Insurance and Bay Area printing.
Local restaurants like BJ’s, Jason’s Deli, Biryani Express, Shipley’s Donuts, Sangam restaurant and IPR Healthcare sponsored food for volunteers.
Organizations like Alvin Community College and HEB served at the Life and Soul Health Fair for the ninth year in a row.
Numerous nurses and practitioners from the Indo-American Nurses Association of Greater Houston volunteered at the event. Employees of Cognizant Technology Solutions and Academy Sports and Outdoors also lent a helping hand with great enthusiasm. More than 20 students volunteered from Houston ISD, Fort Bend ISD, Alvin ISD, Pearland ISD and University of Houston.
Specialists provided consultations in Interventional Radiology, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Endocrinology, Optometry, Dentistry and Rheumatology in addition to Family Medicine.
On one hand the health fair witnessed many like-minded individuals passionately serve the community, and on the other hand hundreds of community members graciously received the services.
The next Life and Soul health fair will be hosted on Sept 19, 2020.
