Swami Abhedananda

Gopa Kuteeram kids around the US are being taught stories from Srimad Bhagavatam, Srimad Ramayanam and Bhakta Charitrams as part of their regular classes and are encouraged to write what they learned.

The following article is from San Ramon, CA Gopa Kuteeram center, on an incident from the life of Swami Abhedhananda.

Swami Abhedananda was a Mahatma. Once he went to Ramana Maharshi’s ashram, and sat to do Atma Vichara, but Maharshi told him to go and do the Mahamantra Kirtan. He didn’t completely believe the Mahamantra Kirtan, so he sat in a cave with his eyes closed waiting for the divine call. The call came from a wealthy family in a nearby-village. Their child was infected with a deadly disease and it couldn’t be cured by the doctors. The family went to Swami Abhedananda to seek help. Swamiji didn’t know as much as everyone thought he knew. He simply told them to chant the Mahamantra throughout the night to save the child. Swamiji was stunned when the family came to him with sweets the next day saying the child was completely cured! From that moment, he chanted the Mahamantra continuously and kept it close to his heart. To this day in Swami Abhedananda’s ashram in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala state in India, people are continuing to chant the Mahamantra continuously without a break, since 1955.
