Srimad Ramayana is a Upasana grantham and not merely a historical narrative. It is a scripture which teaches one how to pray and be closer to God. The 24,000 verses of the Ramayana are woven around the 24 syllables of the Gayatri Mantra. Through Parayanam, the qualities of Lord Rama such as actions, decisions, and physical qualities resonate within one’s heart, creating Rama bhakthi. Even when every verse is not fully understood, recitation has an effect which helps purify the mind.
The central theme of the Ramayana is Dharma. Dharma, as Sri Ramanujamji states, is the intrinsic nature of a being. He says just as nature of salt is to be salty, and sugar is to be naturally sweet, human beings possess a unique freedom of choice – to either follow or ignore their dharma, which often creates inner conflicts and confusion. Lord Rama is the embodiment of Dharma. Through his choices, virtues, morals, and life’s dilemmas, He teaches us how to live. By understanding Rama’s life during parayanam, we can gain clarity about what is right, what our dharma and purpose is, and how to become the “best version of ourselves”.
Parayanam is not just an exercise, but a practice. As one continues to read, understand, and think about the Ramayana, its deeper meanings slowly start to be understood. The time spent in parayanam is also time spent with Dharma rather than distractions. Above all, one does not need to worry about personal gain or even fully understand every detail. Experiencing Ramayana Parayanam with devotion, especially as an offering to our Guru and Lord Rama is by itself a great blessing.
