What is Real Love for God?

We can all reach Bhagavan through pure devotion. It is imperative that we must begin our journey with the Mahamantra and being in satsang. This is the initial stepping-stone.

As we continue to do this with shraddha, over time, we shall come to de-couple the initial notion that more time we spend in satsang leads to better results in material life. Love of Bhagavan has nothing to do with what happens to us in life.

In his discussion, Sri Ramanujamji spoke of how the highest is to love Bhagavan–in whichever form–without expectations. This highest devotion and love toward Bhagavan has two main characteristics: ‘ahaituki’ characterized by pure, untransactional love (love with no reasons or conditions), and ‘apratithatA’ which characterizes love that sees no obstacles (that cannot be stopped).

For example, let’s say one girl is forced to play soccer, while another plays soccer for the love of the game. The one who is forced will find any excuse to bench herself even with the slightest of injuries. However, the one who plays for the love of the game, will continue playing, even if there are minor obstacles or injuries, due to here devotion to the game.

Similarly, we must strive to love Bhagavan with that pure, unobstructed, causeless devotion. Pure love and devotion to Bhagavan is the highest dharma one may fulfill. As cited in the Srimad Bhagavatam:

vAsudeve bhagavati bhaktiyoga: prayojita: |
janayati Ashu vairAgyam jnAnam cha yad ahaitukam || (1.2.7)

Pure devotion to Bhagavan brings forth knowledge and great mental strength.
