By Sri Guruji’s immense grace, the 8th Annual Puranava India Art & Culture Fest was a massive success! Organized by the Global Organization for Divinity Houston, the event took place on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at the Pearland Town Center Mall. While the initial forecast predicted rain and thunderstorms, the weather remained cooperative for most of the day. It turned out to be mostly a glorious day for our outdoor festivities, attracting about 1,500-2000 attendees from across the Greater Houston area.
Arts Performances, Youth Competitions, and Kids Activities
The festival brought India to life with classical and folk dances, martial arts and percussion performances from regions across India. They included Garbha & Dandia (Gujarat); Rabindra Nritya (Bengal); Thiruvathira, Mohiniattam, & Chenda Melam (Kerala); Bharatanatyam, Kummi, Poikaal Kudhirai, & Silambattam martial arts (Tamil Nadu); Raasleela & Kathak (Uttar Pradesh); Bhakti Nritya (Karnataka); Dhol Tasha, Lezim, & Gondhal (Maharashtra); Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh); and Odissi (Orissa). Earlier in the day, over 200 children competed in Chess, Art, Classical Music, Classical Dance, Ethnic Costumes & Quiz contests. A special Indian traditional puppet show in the Kids Zone became a popular item for visitors, while an array of hands-on art & craft activities brought joy and learning to kids there. Henna (mehendi) tattoo artwork and a free photo booth with props provided fun activities for everyone to enjoy.
Food, Shopping, and Service
Attendees enjoyed shopping for artwork, ethnic wear and accessories, gifts, spices, plants, and services from a wide range of vendors, while snacking on delicious vegetarian street food from the entirely volunteer-run ‘Kicha’s Kitchen’ food stall. Community-giving was also a highlight through Love to Share Foundation America, which hosted free health screenings as well as donation drives for Kidz Harbor and Waiting Under the Willow Foundation.
Special Guests
Supported by the cultural arts grant program from Visit Pearland and the City of Pearland, the fest welcomed several distinguished dignitaries who offered high praise for the event and Global Organization for Divinity’s community service: Prashant Sona (Consul, Head of Chancery, Indian Consulate), Kevin Cole (Mayor, City of Pearland), Jay Burridge (Commissioner, Brazoria County, Precinct 1), Alfred Froberg, Jr. (Commissioner, Brazoria County Conservation and Reclamation District No. 3), Martin Vela (Fire Marshal, Brazoria County), Aaron Bell (Chief of Police, City of Iowa Colony), Harry Opliger (Council Member, City of Manvel), Rachana Shah (President, Hindus of Greater Houston), Carolyn Figueroa (Arts Administrator, Visit Pearland), Ranjana Narasiman (Board Member, Sri Meenakshi Temple; President, Classical Arts Society), Tupil Narasiman (Board Member, Sri Meenakshi Temple).
A Grand Finale
The rain eventually arrived in late afternoon, during the grand finale, but the spirit remained high for the Chariot Fest! Devotees pulled the divine chariot of Lord Krishna-Radha Devi inside the pavilion, with performances of Poikaal kudhirai folk dance and a majority-women Chenda Melam traditional percussion and concluding with a vibrant Mahamantra kirtan and prayer.
The event was made memorable and possible only by divine grace, the immense selfless efforts of numerous volunteers, and several generous sponsors who supported the event financially as well as through food and grocery donations. Heartfelt gratitude to every one of them!
