Sri Krishna Janmashtami Madhurotsavam at Houston Sri Aishwarya Srinivasa Perumal Temple

By the blessings of Sri Swamiji and the immense grace of Sri Aishwarya Srinivasa Perumal and Sri Premika Varadan-Madhuri Sakhi, *Sri Krishna Janmashtami Madhurotsavam* was celebrated at Sri Aishwarya Srinivasa Perumal Temple, Manvel, TX, as a ten-day festival of satsang, Srimad Bhagavatam, Nama Sankeertanam, kirtans, cultural offerings and joyous celebrations centered on Sri Krishna and His divine leelas.

A central part of the Madhurotsavam was the complete *Srimad Bhagavata Parayanam*, which continued through the festival and culminated with the Parayanam Poorthi on Janmashtami Day. The daily celebrations were enriched by *Srimad Bhagavata Katha Pravachanams*, through which devotees heard and contemplated the beautiful charitrams and teachings of Srimad Bhagavatam. Among the topics presented during the festival were Srimad Bhagavata Mahatmyam, Parikshit’s Story, Dhruva Charitram, Prahlada Charitram, Sri Krishna Jananam, Krishna’s Bala Leelas, and Rukmini Kalyanam. A special *Srimad Bhagavad Gita Parayanam* was also offered during the celebrations. Nama Sankeertanam and bhajans remained an integral part of the Madhurotsavam through **Ashtapadi bhajans, kirtans, Mahamantra chanting, and kirtan during processions*. Several days included festive *Vahana processions*, including Garuda Vahanam, Kudhirai (horse) Vahanam, Sesha Vahanam, Yaanai (elephant) Vahanam and a special Janavasam procession.

The Madhurotsavam was also blessed with numerous *cultural and musical offerings* each day. Adults, youth and children offered their art to Perumal through classical music, classical dances, bhajans, violin, flute and other devotional presentations. These beautifully complemented the Bhagavata satsang. It was especially heartening to see children and youth participate throughout the festival and contribute to the celebrations in many different ways.

*Janmashtami Day* was one of the most special days of the Madhurotsavam. Following the completion of the Srimad Bhagavata Parayanam, the celebrations continued with *Nikunjotsavam* which included a special Carnatic musical offering by Flute Maestro Vidwan J.A. Jayant with Vidwan N.C. Bharadwaj on mridangam and Vidwan N. Rajaraman on ghatam, along with other devotional musical offerings. The evening included the Sesha Vahanam procession and continued late into the night as devotees gathered for the eagerly awaited celebration of Sri Krishna’s birth at midnight. Sri Krishna Jananam Parayanam, kirtans and Mahamantra chanting accompanied the special Thirumanjanam, culminating at midnight with Maha-Harathi and Dolotsavam.

The following day’s celebrations brought a very different and joyful experience as devotees symbolically travelled to Brindavan for *Vana Bhojanam*. Sri Krishna and Sri Radha were taken in procession, and children, youth and adults came together to enjoy some of the playful games associated with Krishna and His young Gopa friends. It was a simple and joyful way of remembering Krishna’s childhood leelas and experiencing the spirit of Brindavan together.

The day also included *Govinda Pattabhishekam*, celebrating the beautiful Govardhana Leela and remembering the loving relationship between Sri Krishna and the Gopas and Gopis of Brindavan. Our youth further brought Krishna’s stories alive through Hari Katha. The day’s festivities concluded with Janavasam pre-wedding celebration that included a colorful fireworks display.

The ten-day Madhurotsavam reached its conclusion on Sunday Sep 6 with the *Divine Wedding Celebration – Sri Radha Madhava Vivaha Mahotsavam*. After days of Bhagavata Katha, Nama Sankeertanam, processions and celebrations of Sri Krishna’s leelas, the Vivaha Mahotsavam provided a beautiful and auspicious culmination to the festival with the divine wedding of the Divine Couple celebrated in the tradition of Dakshina Bhajana Sampradaya. The final day also included a special *Gratitude & Prayer for donors and sevaks*, followed by *Hanumath Utsavam and Vidayatri*.

More than 350 devotees joined the celebrations on the concluding day, with hundreds more devotees attending the Utsav over the 10 days. As the ten-day festival came to a close, there was a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity that had been given to everyone—to hear Srimad Bhagavatam, chant the divine names, offer kirtans and cultural performances, participate in the various utsavams and spend these days together in satsang.

The Madhurotsavam was possible only through divine grace and the collective kainkaryam of many. We humbly express our gratitude to all the bhagavatas, speakers, musicians, artists, children, youth, volunteers, donors and sevaks, who participated enthusiastically in this divine celebration. The donors and sevaks were also specially appreciated for their continued support of the temple and its activities beyond the Madhurotsavam itself. Many worked quietly behind the scenes—from preparing for the programs and processions to prasadam, decorations, logistics and numerous other forms of kainkaryam.

With humble gratitude at the feet of Sri Swamiji and Sri Aishwarya Srinivasa Perumal, we pray that the memories and anubhavam of these ten days remain with all the devotees and inspire us to continue to seek satsang, chant the divine names and participate in kainkaryam with devotion.
